2 day Immunisation training for Health Care Assistants

The aim of the training is to ensure that Health Care Assistants (HCA’s) have the theoretical knowledge to undertake adult immunisation within General Practice.

Course Curriculum

At the end of the training individuals will:

  • Be able to discuss the responsibilities of HCAs and their employers including the importance of working within the boundaries of policy and guidelines
  • Be able to discuss accountability and delegation in relation to the administration of immunisations
  • Understand the Patient specific direction (PSD)
  • Understand the importance of appropriate communication with service users
  • Understand the importance of obtaining consent and an awareness of the Mental Capacity including the legal aspects of vaccination
  • Have an overview of the immune system and how vaccines work
  • Have an understanding of Influenza & Pneumonia, Vitamin B12 and Shingles and the vaccines which prevent them
  • Be able to discuss the anatomy and physiology of the arm
  • Understand the importance of correct vaccine storage including the cold chain
  • Be able to demonstrate the correct administration of Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections via a practical assessment
  • Be aware of how to dispose of sharps and clinical waste safely
  • Be able to discuss the correct procedure in the event of a needle stick injury
  • Be able to recognise anaphylaxis and other adverse events and know how to deal with them
  • Understand the need for accurate record keeping and the process for reporting adverse reactions.
