Immunisation Initial Training for RGN’s & GP’s

The aim of the training is to ensure that RGN’s & GP’s have the theoretical knowledge to undertake adult & child immunisations within Primary Care .

Course Curriculum

At the end of the training individuals will:

  • Be aware of the reasons behind the immunisation programme
  • Be aware of the current immunisation schedule
  • Have an understanding of the immune system & how vaccines work
  • Have an awareness of vaccine preventable diseases
  • Be aware of the different vaccine compositions
  • Be able to discuss the pathways available in order to communicate with clients & carers
  • Be able to discuss the legal aspects of immunisation, including consent & confidentiality
  • Be able to discuss the use of Patient Specific Directions (PSD’s) & Patient Group Directions (PGD’s) & who is able to use them
  • Be able to discuss the concerns around the correct storage & handling of vaccines & the importance of the cold chain
  • Discuss how to recognise anaphylaxis and other vaccine related untoward events & their treatment
  • Demonstrate the correct administration of vaccines through a practical session
  • Have an understanding of the importance of accurate record keeping & documentation
